For the third straight year Hotel and Club Punta Leona has been awarded the maximum four stars for the Bandera Azul Ecológica program for Playa Blanca and awards for Limoncito, Mantas and the Punta Leona community,
For a tourist complex to satisfy the needs of tourists and at the same time maintain adequate measures of its resources is not only a commitment but an obligation showing a real concern for environment and respect for the ecological processes of biodiversity.
Bandera Azul Ecológica has become a program for continuous improvement that permits diversification and makes competitive, traditional tourist destinations. This creates an added value for visitors who want new things and each time are more demanding.
For Boris Gordienko Echeverría, principle shareholder of Hotel and Club Punta Leona, it is a quality stamp that promotes more sustainable systems such as maintaining the integrity of the environment and strengthening the protection of ecological areas and natural patrimony.
With the same purpose, Miguel Fernández Tercero, general manager of this company, states that eleven years of work has increased awareness towards environment, a Punta Leona responsibility, “contributing in the strengthening of neighboring communities”.

This year the Punta Leona community, consisting of the neighbors of the residential area of the tourist complex, obtained 2 stars thanks to the special attention given to reforestation, protection of water resource, and the supply of drinking water.
One of the most important points of the Punta Leona Community to emphasize is its protection and conservation of its water supply. This has been achieved with adequate programs for fountains, maintenance of tanks and systems of disinfect ion. The aqueduct has received the Bandera Blanca award. |

The Local Committee has not only worked on Playa Blanca and the Punta Leona community. Playa Mantas has received for the second year, 2 stars due to its continued work and improvements in sewage and the reutilization of its waters in the irrigation of green areas.
Playa Limoncito was registered since the creation of the program and is proudly of the few committees that have sustained the Bandera award for 11 years without interruption. |

18 thousand trees planted and a strong fight against dengue |

Among environmental efforts by Hotel and Club Punta Leona in 2006 was its reforestation campaign in neighboring beaches and communities such as: Agujas, Quebrada Ganado, Bajamar, Guacalillo, Jacó, among others where 18 thousand trees were planted.
Likewise, each year a fight to eradicate the breeding grounds for the mosquito that carries dengue is launched through campaigns of cleanups and fumigation in Quebrada Ganado, Tárcoles, Playa Azul, Agujas, and the Punta Leona community.
Mr. Gordienko stated that besides being a strong believer and promoter of the Bandera Azul Ecológica, “our committee has grown together with this noble program because we have been a part of it since its beginning in 1996. We have many years with this program and each day we surpass our own expectations when we deal with our visitors and when we work for our neighboring communities for growth in the appreciation of nature.”
For 11 years the application of PBAE in Costa Rica has generated important benefits for the protection of the costal and non-costal environment promoting public health and an increasing tourist attraction for the country.
Part of these benefits is the promotion of the construction of aqueducts, accessible water service for human consumption, organization and creation of local committees Pro-BAE, environmental education in costal and non-costal communities, and knowledge about quality sanitation. |
