Driving and Directions

By car

  • Take Ruta 27 (Autopista José María Castro Madriz), on the west side of San Jose, direction Orotina. Follow Ruta 27 for about 53 Km. Make sure to prepare change in order to pay the 5 tolls on this section. Once you have past Orotina, continue on Ruta 27 (direction caldera) for approximately 6km and take the exit to Jaco on Ruta 34 (Carr. Pacífica Fernández Oreamuno). Follow Ruta 34 for about 25km. After approximately 12 km, you will pass over the Tarcoles Bridge, where you can stop to watch crocodiles. About 2 km after the bridge, you will see the entrance of the Carara National Park on your left. Continue onto Ruta 34 for about 10 Km, the entrance of Punta Leona will be on the right side of the road.

  • From the town of La Fortuna, take the road 702 direction La Tigra/San Ramon. Follow 702 all the way to San Ramon (approximately 70km). Once in San Ramon, take road 713 direction San Rafael/Desmonte and follow it for about 16Km. You will arrive in front of a Supermarket Called “Super El Aguacate”. Take a right onto road 3 direction Orotina (11km). Once in Orotina, continue on Ruta 27 (direction caldera) for approximately 6km and take the exit to Jaco on Ruta 34 (Carr. Pacífica Fernández Oreamuno). Follow Ruta 34 for about 25km. After approximately 12 km, you will pass over the Tarcoles Bridge, where you can stop to watch crocodiles.   • Take road 606 direction Guacima/coyolar and follow it for about 30km. Turn Left onto the Inter American Highway (Road 1) direction San Joaquin (17km) and take the exit on road 23 direction El Roble/Orotina (12km). Once you arrive to Caldera, take road 27 direction Orotina/San Jose. Follow this road for 16 km and take exit to Jaco, onto road 34 (Carr. Pacífica Fernández Oreamuno). Follow Ruta 34 for about 25km. After approximately 12 km, you will pass over the Tarcoles Bridge, where you can stop to watch crocodiles. About 2 km after the bridge, you will see the entrance of the Carara National Park on your left. Continue onto Ruta 34 for about 10 Km, the entrance of Punta Leona will be on the right side of the road.

  • Take road 32 direction Siquirres/San Jose. Pass Siquirres (72 Km) and stay on road 32 all the way to San Jose (84km). (Follow directions from San Jose).

About Garabito

Garabito is part of the Puntarenas province. It is located on a narrow coastal plain of the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica and is an important pole for foreign investments, especially regarding the construction of beach hotels.

  • Geographic coordinates of the Garabito canton are 09°42’35 latitude north and 84°36’52 longitude west. Maximum width is thirty-nine kilometers from northwest to southwest, from the mouth of the Jesus Maria River in the pacific coast, to about 800 meters upstream from the mouth of the river Tusubres. Garabito is located in the mouth of the Rio Grande de Tarcoles. It is divided into two districts, which are:

    • Jacó, capital of the cantón.
    • Tárcoles.

    Garabito is home to the following protected areas:

    • Carara National Park.
    • Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Playa Hermosa, located in the South of Jacó.
    • Zona Protectora Tivives, located in Tárcoles.
  • Jacó is only 108 km away from San José. National and international tourism is one of the main economic activities of the canton, followed by agriculture and livestock on a smaller scale. In addition, the construction field has boosted the local economy in recent years. Garabito is home the touristic destinations such as Punta Leona, Playa Hermosa (Costa Rica), Playa Herradura, the carrara national Park and Jacó, capital of the canton.
